Refactor your Code easily using the Visual Studio 2012

In our last blog post we discussed about browser switching mechanism in Visual Studio 2012 for web developers to test their web applications against different web browsers which actually increases the productivity time of such applications.   Today in this post, we will learn about the Refactor feature of Visual Studio 2012 which will again improve your productivity without using any additional tools or extensions. So, continue reading this post to learn about this feature of new Visual Studio IDE.   Note: I composed this post based on Visual Studio 2012 RC (version: 11.0.50522.1 RCREL) and can't guarantee this in the final version of the product though the chance of feature change is very negligible.     Microsoft introduces a new "Refactor" menu in Visual Studio 2012 IDE, which will help the developer to refactor their codes easily without using any 3rd party control or extensions. As this is an in-built feature now, hence you will get it...

A gesture-driven Windows Phone to-do application Part Two – drag re-ordering

A couple of weeks ago I blogged about a todo list application which uses gestures to achieve its basic functions, a left swipe deletes an item, while a right-swipe marks it as complete. In this blog post I am adding re-ordering which is initiated via a tap-and-hold gesture and performed via a drag.

As mentioned previously, this application is heavily inspired by the iPhone application Clear, who I give full credit for coming up with such an innovative user-interface design. This blog post is for fun an education, you are strictly prohibited from using this as the basis of a 'Clear' clone for WP7.

Making Your Own MySQL Backup and Restore Tools in C#/VB.NET/ASP.NET - MySqlBackup.DLL (Supports Unicode, UTF8)

This article introduce a tool (DLL) that can backup/restore MySQL database in .NET Programming Language and some sample codes on how to use it. It is an alternative to MySqlDump.

On the other hand, this tool uses native .NET language to handle all values and parameters, therefore it can handle Unicode/UTF8 character (multi-language) well.

Another benefits of making this tool is, we don't have to rely on two small programs - MySqlDump.exe and MySql.exeto perform the backup and restore task. We will have better control on the output result.

This tool is develop in C# but useable in VB.NET.

The most common way to backup a MySQL Database is by using MySqlDump and MySQL Administrator.

MySQL Administrator is good for developers, but, when comes to client or end-user, the recommended way is to get every parameter preset and all they need to know is press the big button "Backup" and everything is done. Using MySQL Administrator as a backup tool is not a suitable solution for client or end-user.

On the other hand, MySqlDump is another tool that can customize within code to meet specific situation. However, MySqlDump has compatible problems while handling with Unicode characters, for example Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Russian characters. The data will corrupt during the encoding between MySQL database and MySqlDump.

This tool (MySqlBackup.dll) can helps developer to build the big button "Backup" for end-user (so everything done automatically) and solves the Unicode encoding error that might cause by MySqlDump.

Why most of Windows Phone apps that connect with Facebook will stop working on July 5, 2012

When developing apps that connects to social networks like Facebook or Twitter, the common practice is to show the user a web control that allows him to authenticate.

To provide a better user experience, it is recommended to use the appropriate display mode:

'page' for desktop web browsers
'popup' for desktop web browsers without a page redirect
'touch' for touch devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.)
'wap' for mobile phones (deprecated)

The problem is that currently the 'touch' display mode is not supported by Facebook on Windows Phone, so it falls back on 'wap'.

Process Lifetime Management (PLM) and Managing State in Windows8 Metro C# Applications

In the traditional Windows environment, the user manages the lifetime of their applications. The user launches the application and it continues to run until the user decides to close it. The problem with this model is that applications continue to drain system resources, including memory and CPU, even when they are not in the foreground. This impacts the performance of the application the user is using as well as drains the battery faster when the device is not plugged in.

Windows 8 Metro applications only run when they are in the foreground. This allows the user to focus on the primary application they wish to interact with. Applications in the background go into a suspended state. In the suspended state the threads for the application are literally frozen in place. The application will no longer take up system resources or impact battery life. Most of the time, the application will remain in memory. This allows fast application switching, so when the user swipes back to a different application, it resumes immediately as if it were already running.

Windows 8 Apps – Keeping it Simple

We have all been is situations where we have seen code implemented in an unnecessarily complex way or where the number of features in an app has gotten out of control. I like to think that the use of "KISS" ("Keep it simple – stupid") is one of the main stays of all the projects that I am involved in (!). However, I have seen my first Windows 8 project evolve from being simple (or so I thought) to being simple ("no, but really this time"). And I have to conclude that there is an algorithm in play that doesn't always get the acknowledgement it deserves. In short I am talking about the relationship between "time and complexity". Most people might understand that the more complex something is the more time is required for implementation. However, in my experience often times the opposite is true and time can be the (often missing) crucial factor in harnessing and reigning in an otherwise complex application.

Designing MetroTwit for Windows 8

We know it's still a bit rough around the edges and not feature complete but we hope it offers a teaser of what we think will be a compelling Twitter app for Windows 8 users.

Designing MetroTwit for Windows 8 was no walk in the park. We couldn't simply copy and paste our desktop application's source code; WPF code doesn't port to WinRT as well as you may have heard. But regardless, that code wasn't designed for touch. A tough challenge to say the least.

Generic WPF-Silverlight implementation for IValueConverter

I originally created a simpler form of this value converter for simple conversions of Boolean properties to custom values, in particular converting Boolean to Visibility. This was published in CodeProject as "Generic WPF/Silverlight Value Converter" (http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/289495/Generic-WPF-Silverlight-Value-Converter). I got tired of recreating the wheel for slight changes in the values, and cluttering up my application with numerous value converters. Recently I was working on a new project, and really did not want to add a Boolean property for each special state. This would almost be as bad as adding a special property just for Visibility. I got the idea of adding a third customizable property to my converter. So now I have a much more flexible value converter.

A Zune Style Application Template for WPF and Silverlight

This article is about a pair of Visual Studio project templates I have written, one for Silverlight and one for WPF. They provide similar output - a clean and minimal project that has a user interface inspired by Microsoft Zune. To see how it looks, you can look at the Silverlight version in your browser, download the demo applications or go ahead and install the Apex SDK and create a new project in Visual Studio 2010 from the templates!

WCF - Authentication and Authorization in Enterprise Architecting

In this article I am going to show how to use Authorization and Authentication using a WCF service in Enterprise Architecting standards. This article is about advanced WCF concepts. I am using an error driven approach for better experience with the problems and the solutions.

The core aspects we cover here are:
  • WCF
  • ASP.NET Authentication Service
  • Custom Authentication
  • HTTP Cookies
  • Authorization PrincipalPermission attribute
  • Thread CurrentPrincipal
  • Message Interceptors
You will be wondering what the above are. In a quick snap following are the activities involved.
  1. Create a WCF Service Application
  2. Add a AuthenticationService.svc reusing the ASP.NET Authentication Service
  3. Create a User Validator class
  4. Enable Custom Authentication in Global.asax
  5. Return Cookie if valid user
  6. Modify service configuration
  7. Try accessing the Authentication Service in the browser
  8. Create a UtilityService.svc with a method named GetData(int)
  9. Decorate GetData(int) with the PrincipalPermission attribute for Authorized Access only
  10. Decorate the UtilityService class with the AspNetCompatibilityRequirements attribute
  11. Set he Utility Service constructor to set CurrentPrincipal from the Cookie
  12. Create the client application and add references to both services
  13. Create the Authentication Service instance and invoke the Login() method
  14. Receive the cookie and store it
  15. Create the UtilityService instance and invoke GetData()
  16. Attach the Cookie to the UtilityService client
  17. Test the application and ensure proper functioning
  18. Move the cookie attaching code to Interceptors in the Client Application
  19. Move the identity setting code to Interceptors in the Service Application
  20. Modify the service side code to include Role instead of Name
  21. Use Encrypted Ticket for storing User Name and Roles
  22. Retest the application

A Framework in C# for Fingerprint Verification

Fingerprint recognition [1] is an active research area nowadays. An important component in fingerprint recognition systems is the fingerprint matching algorithm. According to the problem domain, fingerprint matching algorithms are classified in two categories: fingerprint verification algorithms and fingerprint identification algorithms. The aim of fingerprint verification algorithms is to determine whether two fingerprints come from the same finger or not. On the other hand, the fingerprint identification algorithms search a query fingerprint in a database looking for the fingerprints coming from the same finger.

There are hundreds of papers concerning to fingerprint verification but, as far as we know, there is not any framework for fingerprint verification available on the web. So, you must implement your own tools in order to test the performance of your fingerprint verification algorithms. Moreover, you must spend a lot of time implementing algorithms of other authors to compare with your algorithms. This was our motivation to put our fingerprint verification framework available for everyone.

The most closely related work to our framework is the FVC-onGoing web system. This system has the following limitations:
  • You do not have access to any algorithm but yours.
  • It is not a framework; so, you cannot reuse any software component.
  • It cannot be used with educational purpose because students cannot see how the algorithms work.
  • After performing an experiment using a database (standard or hard) you must wait 30 days to perform another experiment using the same database.
  • You do not have control over the fingerprint databases. Thus, you cannot use your own databases neither modify the existing ones.
  • You do not have access to the fingerprints that your algorithm fails matching. Hence, you cannot analyze why the algorithm fails in order to fix your code.
  • You cannot create an experiment with a custom protocol for performance evaluation.

WPF EnumComboBox

Selecting a value from an enumeration of appropriate values is a common task. A ComboBox is a well suited GUI element for that purpose. The ComboBox shows textual representations of all available values.

How do we get "nice" texts? A simple solution is the use of friendly names for the values, as does e.g.System.Drawing.Color[^] . But there is a drawback: a name must not contain white space (e.g. "Dark Blue" was changed to "DarkBlue").

A more advanced solution uses the Description attribute[^]. A converter, e.g. Description Enum TypeConverter[^], is used for the conversions from the value to the string and vice versa. Also a converter implementing WPF'sIValueConverter interface is available: Using DescriptionAttribute for enumerations bound to a ComboBox[^] .

When it comes to localization, things become more complicated. Most examples on the web only show how to get localized strings into the ComboBox, but omit the step from a user selection back to the enum value. Only Sacha Barber's great article Binding and Using Friendly Enums in WPF[^] shows how to do a two-way binding.

VisualStudio2012 New Features: Quick Launch

In the past, finding things deep in the IDE has been a challenge. Visual Studio 2012 introduces search abilities at virtually every level of the product. Perhaps the biggest change is the introduction of Quick Launch (CTRL + Q) which specifically addresses how to dig inside Visual Studio to find features you need. Let's take a look.

WP TimeSpanPicker Throws Exception: The Solution

Just a quick tip regarding a strange exception with the TimeSpanPicker control.

In one of our previous posts we explained how to use the Coding4Fun toolkit WP7 TimeSpanPicker in depth. However it seems that in the latest release of the toolkit v v1.5.6 some changes have been made.

Here is the exception that happens if you try to use the control as expected by adding a reference to Coding4Fun.Phone.Controls.Toolkit.dll and including the namespace xmlns:controls="clr-namespace:Coding4Fun.Phone.Controls.Toolkit;assembly=Coding4Fun.Phone.Controls.Toolkit"

How to change the Style of the WP TimeSpanPicker control

There is no easy way to change the size of the default TimeSpanPicker style, because in its ControlTemplate the Height of the target element is set to 72, so if you just set a height to the TimeSpanPicker nothing happens. Here is how the default ControlTemplate looks like.

WP Emulator Crashing on Windows8? Here's a Fix

Don't you just hate it when you upgrade to a new OS (even when it's a beta) and everything works amazingly well, except for that one critical bit of infrastructure that just fails? That's kind of how you might be feeling if you boot up your brand spanking new Windows 8 install, install VS 2010 and the WP 7.1 SDK, followed by the 7.1.1. update to get the emulator and Tango support, boot up your project - hit F5... drum roll... emulator crashes. Sigh.

10 *MORE* Things you Probably Didn’t know about Win8

Back in April 2012, I shared a list of "10 Things you probably didn't know about Windows 8." I had a lot of great feedback through Twitter and Facebook, so I decided to share 10 *MORE* things you probably didn't know about Windows 8. So, in no particular order here we go again.

Share contract through MVVM in Win8

@BartLannoeye ( his blog ) and I did a session on Building the Windows 8 Community app, last week at Community Day 2012, this as members of the WiPhug user group.

So this is the second post in reference to our session, this time on how you can use a share contract through MVVM.

So one of the new neat features of Windows 8 is the Share Contract, it allows you to 'share data' from within your own app with other apps. You can read in more detail here what it is all about and sure check this list of possible data types you can use to share data here.

How to market WP games

Last week our new game snowball ninja hit the windows phone marketplace so since then most of our time has been spent on marketing activities promoting it. At this stage it seems our strategy has been fairly effective as the game is ranked between 20-60 in most major windows phone marketplace regions, for free shooter games.

WP7 Database Support – The Quick and Dirty Intro

I finally got my act together and started doing some WP7 development again. It has been a while, and a few things have happened since I was last doing it…Mango for example. This also means that there are a heap of new features available to me as a developer, but the one that I have got real excited about is actually the database support…

So, Chris, being who you are, why in the world did you chose that feature to get excited about? Well, partly because it was the first new feature I have tried out. But mostly because I sort of didn't expect to be as neat. Knowing that it was based on SqlCE, I sort of expected it to use a subset of ADO.NET, and regular SQL for access. However, color me surprised when I realized that that wasn't the case.

Introduction to NoSQL

For the past several decades, database professionals use a single standard supported by all databases: which is the Structured Query Language (SQL). We've relied upon the table-oriented relational database for all of our data storage and retrieval needs, without thinking about other alternatives. But now time is changing. The NoSQL database model tosses the relational model on its head by abandoning many deeply held beliefs about the "proper" structure for a database. In exchange for removing some of the design constraints, NoSQL databases can achieve enhanced performance flexibility.

Changing the Model

Relational databases have always relied upon some very hard-and-fast, structured rules that govern the conduct of database transactions. These are encoded in the ACID model and require that the database always preserve the some rules which are atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability of database transactions.  Any action that might violate the ACID model is expressly prohibited and there is no way to handle some fuzzy situations.

NoSQL uses the BASE model and turns the ACID model upside down and allows a much more laissez-faire approach to database management. Instead of requiring strict adherence to the ACID principles, BASE offers three loose rules which are basic availability, soft state and eventual consistency. It's fair to say that NoSQL's BASE approach is the laid-back alternative to the straight-laced ACID model used by relational databases.

If Not Tables, Then What?

Instead of using structured tables to store multiple related attributes in a row, NoSQL databases use the concept of a key/value store. Quite simply, there is no schema for the database. It simply stores values for each provided key, distributes them across the database and then allows their well-organized retrieval. The lack of a schema prevents complex queries and essentially prevents the use of NoSQL as a transactional database environment.

There are four main types of NoSQL databases:
  1. The basic key/value store performs nothing other than the function described above – taking a binary data object, associating it with a key, and storing it in the database for later retrieval.
  2. Document stores go beyond this slightly by imposing a little more structure on the binary object. The objects must be documents, encoded in some recognizable format, such as XML or PDF, but there are no requirements about the structure or content of the document. Each document is stored as the value portion of a key/value store and may be accompanied by metadata embedded in the document itself.
  3. Columnar databases are a hybrid between NoSQL and relational databases. They provide some row-and-column structure, but do not have the strict rules of relational databases.
  4. Graph databases store information in multi-attribute tuples that reflect relationships in a different way. For example, a graph database might be used to store the "friend" relationships of a social network, with a record merely consisting of two friends who share a relationship.
NoSQL Architecture

The core of the NoSQL database is the hash function – a mathematical algorithm that takes a variable length input and produces a consistent, fixed-length output. The key of each key/value pair being fed to a NoSQL database is hashed and this hash value is used to direct the pair to a particular NoSQL database server, where the record is stored for later retrieval.

When an application wishes to retrieve a key value pair, it provides the database with the key. This key is then hashed again to determine the appropriate server where the data would be stored (if the key exists in the database) and then the database engine retrieves the key/value pair from that server.

As you read the description of this process, you may find yourself wondering "How does the user or application perform more advanced queries, such as finding all of the keys that have a particular value or sorting data by a value?" And, there's the rub – NoSQL databases simply do not support this type of functionality. They are designed for the rapid, efficient storage of key/value pairs where the application only needs a place to stash data, later retrieving it by the key, and only by the key. If you need to perform other queries, NoSQL is not the appropriate platform for your use.

Redundancy and Scalability in NoSQL

The simplistic architecture of NoSQL databases is a major benefit when it comes to redundancy and scalability. To add redundancy to a database, administrators simply add duplicate nodes and configure replication between a primary node and its counterpart. Scalability is simply a matter of adding additional nodes. When those nodes are added, the NoSQL engine adjusts the hash function to assign records to the new node in a balanced fashion.

Can we Upgrade our WP7 Device to Support WP8?

In the Windows Phone Summit, Microsoft clearly mentioned that, there will not be any kind of upgrades of Windows Phone 8 in Windows Phone 7.x devices. Instead of that, they will throw a upgrade to WP7.8 for all the WP7.x handsets to fulfill the transitions between Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8.

This post will cover the new interesting stuff (from the Windows Phone Summit) that Windows Phone 7.8 will have to give you a look & feel of Windows Phone 8.

Working With Live Tiles in Windows 8 Metro App-Part 2

In my previous article, I explained the basics about tile as well as showed you how to send tile notifications step by step. In this article, I will show you another demo with another XML template, in which the notification will include an image along with the text. Also in this article, I will tell you how to clear the notifications.

First of all we need to have a new image(150*150) which will be used as a tile notification. You can get the image here. Now open the same project which we created earlier for the first part. Comment out all the codes that are there in the click event of the button created. Insert the image in the root folder of your project and then refresh the solution explorer. Do not forget to include that image in your project. This time we will use "TileSquarePeekImageAndText01" template for tile notification.

Mapping and Location in WP

A previous article demonstrated how to retrieve location information from a Windows Phone using the GeoCoordinateWatcher, and how to present this information within your application using the Bing Map control. We're going to extend this example to show how to wire up a collection of points, and how you can customize how each of these points are displayed.

To begin with, we need some data to display. In this case, the data set (Listing 1) is a static array of Australia's capital cities.

Silverlight Debug Helper for Visual Studio 2012 RC

My small add-in for Visual Studio to help you debug your Silverlight applications had problems running on Visual Studio 2012 RC. It installed correctly but did not show up in the respective menu, and wasn't able to do its work either. Time to introduce some changes I wanted to do for a long time anyway!

The Debug Helper now is a Visual Studio Extension rather than an add-in, and can be installed directly from the Extension Manager from within Visual Studio, or downloaded from the Visual Studio Gallery here.

A Developer Perspective on WP8

This blog post takes a look at what Windows Phone 8 (WP8) means for Windows Phone 7 (WP7) developers and the Microsoft development platform in general.

This has been a big week for Microsoft; Monday saw them unveil the new Surface tablet that runs Windows 8. This was followed up yesterday with Window Phone 8 being revealed to the crowds at the Windows Phone Summit (You can see a video of the keynote here).

From a consumer perspective, unfortunately WP7 devices will not be upgraded to WP8. However, they will be upgraded to WP7.8, which will give them the redesigned start screen. There have been very few details about what else WP7.8 will include, but it isn't likely to include that much.
