4 Top Alternatives to YouTube for Sharing Videos

YouTube is the largest video sharing platform of the Internet world but for several reasons, a huge number of Internet users search for YouTube alternatives. Build Async Services with ASP.NET Web API and Entity Framework 6

If you are building web services that interact with a database, chances are they are not written in a scalable fashion. Web services based either on WCF, which supports both SOAP and REST, or on ASP.NET Web API, which exclusively supports REST, use the .NET Thread Pool to respond to requests. But just because services are inherently multithreaded does not make them scale when numerous requests are made simultaneously. The very reason why threads are pooled, instead of created on the fly, is because they are an extremely expensive resource, both in terms of memory and CPU utilization. For example, each thread consumes about 1 MB of stack space, in addition to the register set context and thread properties.

Dependency Injection / Inversion of Control–A Concrete Example-Roll your own

How exactly does Dependency Injection work? It seemed rather mysterious to me from the implementation point of view. Some people look at a compiler and think, "Wow, that's cool how it could translate source code into machine code."

Design pattern – Inversion of control and Dependency injection

In this section we will discuss about how IOC and DI can help us build loosely coupled software architecture. I am not sure should we call this a design pattern or more of a approach. If you search around the web you will see lot of controversy on whether IOC is a design pattern or not. From my point of view it is a design pattern as it solves a problem context.

Inversion of Control Containers and the Dependency Injection pattern

In the Java community there's been a rush of lightweight containers that help to assemble components from different projects into a cohesive application. Underlying these containers is a common pattern to how they perform the wiring, a concept they refer under the very generic name of "Inversion of Control". In this article I dig into how this pattern works, under the more specific name of "Dependency Injection", and contrast it with the Service Locator alternative. The choice between them is less important than the principle of separating configuration from use.

The Onion Architecture

I've spoken several times about a specific type of architecture I call "Onion Architecture". I've found that it leads to more maintainable applications since it emphasizes separation of concerns throughout the system. I must set the context for the use of this architecture before proceeding. This architecture is not appropriate for small websites. It is appropriate for long-lived business applications as well as applications with complex behavior. It emphasizes the use of interfaces for behavior contracts, and it forces the externalization of infrastructure.

Peeling Back the Onion Architecture

I recently started a consulting project as an architect on an ASP.NET MVC application and quickly found myself immersed in the world of N* open source tools. MVC (which stands for Model-View-Controller) lends itself to an Agile development methodology where TDD and BDD (Test-Driven and Behavior-Driven Development) are important components. Writing applications that are testable requires that you separate business logic from presentation logic so that they can be independently tested. This is a concept known as separation of concerns (SoC), which, in addition to testability, provides other benefits, such as greater application longevity and maintainability. The life of an application is extended because loose coupling makes it easer to upgrade or replace components without affecting other parts of the system.

Advanced Cucumber syntax

A background section in a feature file allows you to specify a set of steps that are common to every scenario in the file. Instead of having to repeat those steps over and over for each scenario, you move them up into a Background: element. You can have a single Background: element per feature file, and it must appear before any of the Scenario: or Scenario Outline: elements. Just like all the other Gherkin elements, you can give it a name, and you have space to put a multiline description before the first step.

VisualStudio Tip: Configure Code Analysis in Visual Studio

I like well-written code, and I especially like it when I've written it. But I don't always live up to my own expectations. So I've used various tools (FxCop, CodeRush, ReSharper) to give me some objective feedback on the quality of my code. Starting with Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft built the latest version of their tools into Visual Studio Professional. From Visual Studio's Analyze menu, you can select Run Code Analysis on individual projects or on your whole solution.

Windows 8 apps: Make your GridView parallactic

Few months ago I wrote a post about a way to apply a parallactic effect to a GridView. Given that I explained the meaning of the "parallactic" term in that post, I assume you already know it. Unfortunately, the solution I explained was based on the use of a ScrollViewer to wrap a GridView. This was because the ScrollViewer exposes the ViewChanged event but the GridView don't. This is a minor issue in some cases, but lot of times the scrolling is not so smooth and fluid as the one of the GridView.

How to get the Unique Device ID in WP8 using Oxygene?

In Windows Phone 8, you can easily get the Unique Device ID using the DeviceExtendedProperties.GetValue or DeviceExtendedProperties.TryGetValue method. In order to retrieve the Unique Device ID in Windows Phone, the developer should also include the ID_CAP_IDENTITY_DEVICE capability in the WMAppManifest.xml file. When this is not included, you will receive the following message when trying to executing the code.

NHibernate Made Simple

This article grew out of my frustration trying to get started with NHibernate. It seemed that all the introductory material I found was either very vague or so detailed that I got overwhelmed before getting to first base. What I was looking for was a simple, straightforward tutorial that would get me up to speed on the fundamentals of NHibernate as quickly as possible. I never found it. Hopefully, this article will serve those needs for other people. This article is going to be rather lengthy, but I encourage you to work your way through it. NHibernate is a complex piece of software, with a steep learning curve. This article will flatten the curve from a matter of days or weeks to a matter of a few hours.

Introduction to Partial Methods

Partial methods are a new feature in the .NET programming world. The earlier versions of .NET had partial class, partial structures, partial interface. With the introduction of ".NET Framework 3.0", the partial family gets a new member partial method, which allows to separate method definition and implementation. Partial methods are not really complicated. In this article, I will try to explain the basic rules of partial methods and how simple it is to use partial methods.

Android and iOS Mobile Device Development with Azure Mobile Services using HTML5 and JavaScript

I'm going to adapt the sample todo app that's part of the Get started with Mobile Services tutorial. You'll notice that there are already tutorials for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 but the problem with these, excluding WP8, is that you need to use an environment other than Visual Studio. This might be OK if you're already familiar with Java, Objective C, Eclipse, and XCode, but is obviously less than ideal if you're not.

Debugging Code Efficiently in Visual Studio with the DebuggerDisplay Attribute

It is sometime difficult when you have a bunch of properties exposed from a class and you just need few of them while debugging a code block. Sometimes it becomes even more complex when you have a collection of that class. Is there any easiest way to improve the code debugging in Visual Studio? Yes, there is. In this post we are going to learn this technique if you have never used it yet. Code debugging is not a child's play and it's becomes difficult when debugging a code written by someone else. In such case, if your boss assigns a bug to you and asks to fix as priority basis, it may come as thunderstorm. While debugging the code, you notice that it's an issue in a collection where the values are not properly assigned, you have to break your head pinning the items in the Visual Studio debugger and checking individual properties/variables in multiple levels. Just think about a scenario like this: In the above scenario, you have to go...

Tips for Localizing WP8 XAML Apps

This is Part 1 of a two part series. Part 1 gives you a deeper understanding of the standard pattern for localizing a Windows Phone 8 XAML app along with a lesson learned or two. In Part 2 (coming soon) I will describe how the powerful Multilingual App Toolkit , which will soon be released for the Windows Phone SDK 8.0, can make the end-to-end process of localizing your app substantially easier. So you've decided to localize your planned Windows Phone app. Perhaps you realized (or already knew) that making your app available in other languages means your app can reach a much bigger market with fewer competitors. You've read Localization best practices for Windows Phone and How to build a globalized app for Windows Phone and other content in the Globalization and localization for Windows Phonesection of MSDN.

SQLite in WP8: The sequel

Last week I've blogged about using SQLite in an MVVM scenario in Windows Phone 8. Since, in my opinion, the post was already getting to an epic length I decided to leave out a part for this week. I'll try to keep it a bit shorter this time, should be able to. The part I left out was using relationships and foreign keys with SQLite and the sqlite-net library. I'll be building upon the project of the previous post, so the task schedule thingy. What we'll be doing is adding the possibility of creating subtasks so that a task can be divided into smaller tasks. Note that this is just a proof of concept (POC) it's in no way a complete application and it will have some strange things but that's the whole fun of a POC.
