The error can be in string.Format like function with wrong number of input as

string.Format(@"insert into table_1 (vch_value) values('{1}')", "the value of i is " + i)

Tools of the Trade: What Tools I Use for iOS Consulting

Since going Indie, I am constantly asked about what software tools I use to facilitate the process. People are always curious about invoicing, time tracking, ticket management, etc…

The purpose of this post is two fold. First, I want to educate others on some of the cool tools I have found that have helped me out tremndously. The other is, I would hope that veterans in the space could give their two cents as to some better tools (or better use of the current one's). Either way, I'd love to hear from you.

JSBasic - A BASIC to JavaScript Compiler

In this article, a translator is written which takes a program written in BASIC and converts it to JavaScript. The purpose of this project is not just for the nostalgia of being able to write programs in BASIC again, but also to demonstrate how one can go about writing a compiler in C#.

Being able to define a language and write a compiler for it will not only give you insight into how the programming languages you use work, but it's useful in a number of real-world scenarios, such as writing a custom rules engine for a business application, allowing things such as levels in a game to be describable in a simple language, writing IDE add-ins, or writing a domain-specific language.

Today's iOS Developer Resources

Today's iOS Developer Resources

1. Framework Providing A Lightweight Node.js Compatible Server That Runs Within iOS Apps

A framework allowing you to create a Node.js compatible javascript server that runs within your iOS Objective-C apps.

You can find neu.Node on Github here with detailed information and an example project containing several different demonstration servers including a chat server, and a streaming video server.

After loading up the demo project and starting a server you'll find it running at port 8000.

2. Example: Rendering The Milky Way Galaxy On iOS Devices Using OpenGL ES

An example demonstrating how to render the massive Milky Way galaxy in full 3D using OpenGL ES and running on the iOS platform.

You can find the OpenGLMilkyWay example on Github here.

You can find this example in use in Hanno's impressive ExoPlanet app.

There's a PDF included in the Github repository providing some slides explaining a bit more into the techniques used for this impressive example.

3. iOS Library For Automatically Creating CRUD Interfaces (Scaffolding) Using A Core Data Model

An iOS Objective-C library that automatically creates create, read, update and delete (CRUD) scaffolding based on a Core Data model.

You can find SDScaffoldKit on Github here.

Just like with a Rails project it's highly unlikely you'd release an iOS app with some basic untouched scaffolding, but it provides a good starting point.

4. Alternative Objective-C Static Code Analyzer With Complexity Checking/Easily Customizable Rules

A static code analyzer tool that works with Objective-C providing an easy to customize ruleset and the capability of checking code complexity.

You can find the OCLint homepage here with links to binary downloads and the source can be found on Github here.

You can find the documentation for changing the rules here.

I tested this tool from the command line, but there is an experiemental helper program for working with Xcode.

If you take a look at the rules directory of the source code you can play around with and tweak rules.

If you've created, or come across any iOS developer resources that you'd like to share you can submit them in below comment section.

Virtual Networking: What's All the Hype?

Cloud computing is spreading rapidly across the IT industry, and it's being heralded as the next IT revolution. While virtualization has been limited to servers and computers, a new form has begun to percolate in the troposphere: network virtualization. Network virtualization, or a software-defined network (SDN), allows users to switch the control of a network over to an operating system rather than hosting it on a data center, making the environment completely virtual. So what is SDN all about? And why do industry experts think it holds so much potential? Let's take a look at this emerging form of virtualization. (For background reading, see A Beginner's Guide to the Cloud: What It Means for Small Business.)

InteractiveToolTip - Tooltips you can click on!

A few months ago I was working on a code-analysis tool for a project. The tool had the ability to detect a wide range of issues with the code under analysis, and as many of these problems could be corrected automatically I started looking at a suitable user-interface for presenting the information to the user and allowing them to choose whether to apply the automated fixes. After trying a few ideas out, I hit on the idea of using a balloon-style tooltip which could be displayed adjacent to the piece of code with a problem. This took care of the presentation, but of course you can't put controls into WinForms tooltips... I hit Google thinking that I couldn't possibly be the only person out there with this problem. I wasn't, but I also couldn't find any solutions, just a lot of people asking how to do it. Undeterred, I started to research how tooltips work.

Internals of Dependency Property in WPF

WPF introduces new property system to us. Every WPF objects that is inherited from DependencyObject inherently supports Dependency property containers within it. That means you can define your own dependency property in your code which can take part in some of the interesting features of WPF like Binding, Styles, Triggers, Animation, Property Inheritence etc. Today I will concentrate on how Dependency Property system is actually built and what are the benefits we get instead of using CLR property system.

AJAX for Beginners - Understanding ASP.NET AJAX Server Controls

Desktop applications and web applications have one major difference and that is the stateless nature of web applications. A website runs on a client and communicates with a server in a stateless manner. So every action taken by the user on his browser has to be propagated back to the web server to determine the outcome of that action. Due to this required postback to the server, web applications find it very difficult to achieve a high degree of responsiveness in terms of user interface and functionality (something that desktop applications manage quite easily).

AJAX, i.e., Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is the technique that can be used to have communication between the client and server without needing a postback. The benefit of avoiding postback is faster response to the user, the page in the browser is not changed/refreshed/posted so the user can continue to use it while data is sent to the server and user actions like keypresses can also be communicated to the server to provide more meaningful results (example: autosuggest), i.e., enhanced overall usability of the web application.

Design and Develop a website using ASP.NET MVC 4, EF, Knockoutjs and Bootstrap

All websites are growing faster these days, and once it grows, it is very hard to write, organize and maintain. As we add new functionality or developer to a project, any large web applications with poor design may be go out of control. So the idea behind this article is to design a website architecture that must be simple, easily understandable by any web designer (beginner to intermediate) and Search Engines. For this article I am trying to design a website for any individuals to maintain their contact details online. However, in future, the same application could be used by large community all over the world with added functionality and modules. So, the design should be easily adaptable in order to cope with the future growth of business.

In this article I will talk about creating and designing User Interface (UI) in such a manner so that UI will be separated from the business logic, and can be created independently by any designer/developer. For this part we will use ASP.Net MVC, Knockout Jquery and Bootstrap.

The Second part of this series is more about database design and implementing business logic using structured layers using SQl Server 2008, Entity Framework, and Castle Windsor for Dependency Injection.
