Advanced Cucumber syntax

A background section in a feature file allows you to specify a set of steps that are common to every scenario in the file. Instead of having to repeat those steps over and over for each scenario, you move them up into a Background: element. You can have a single Background: element per feature file, and it must appear before any of the Scenario: or Scenario Outline: elements. Just like all the other Gherkin elements, you can give it a name, and you have space to put a multiline description before the first step.

VisualStudio Tip: Configure Code Analysis in Visual Studio

I like well-written code, and I especially like it when I've written it. But I don't always live up to my own expectations. So I've used various tools (FxCop, CodeRush, ReSharper) to give me some objective feedback on the quality of my code. Starting with Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft built the latest version of their tools into Visual Studio Professional. From Visual Studio's Analyze menu, you can select Run Code Analysis on individual projects or on your whole solution.

Windows 8 apps: Make your GridView parallactic

Few months ago I wrote a post about a way to apply a parallactic effect to a GridView. Given that I explained the meaning of the "parallactic" term in that post, I assume you already know it. Unfortunately, the solution I explained was based on the use of a ScrollViewer to wrap a GridView. This was because the ScrollViewer exposes the ViewChanged event but the GridView don't. This is a minor issue in some cases, but lot of times the scrolling is not so smooth and fluid as the one of the GridView.

How to set advanced properties for video recording in WP8

Windows Phone 8 provides a robust array of options for video recording, including CaptureSource, VideoCaptureDevice, and AudioVideoCaptureDevice. AudioVideoCaptureDevice was introduced in Windows Phone 8 and provides an extended set of capabilities and improved performance. Moreover, as it is part of the WinPRT API, it is the only interface that can be called from native code. Details can be found here. One of the most exciting features of AudioVideoCaptureDevice is that it provides advanced settings for video recording, such as H.264 encoding level, H.264 encoding profiles, video frame rate, and so on. The full list of supported settings can be found on this MSDN webpage.

How to get the Unique Device ID in WP8 using Oxygene?

In Windows Phone 8, you can easily get the Unique Device ID using the DeviceExtendedProperties.GetValue or DeviceExtendedProperties.TryGetValue method. In order to retrieve the Unique Device ID in Windows Phone, the developer should also include the ID_CAP_IDENTITY_DEVICE capability in the WMAppManifest.xml file. When this is not included, you will receive the following message when trying to executing the code.

NHibernate Made Simple

This article grew out of my frustration trying to get started with NHibernate. It seemed that all the introductory material I found was either very vague or so detailed that I got overwhelmed before getting to first base. What I was looking for was a simple, straightforward tutorial that would get me up to speed on the fundamentals of NHibernate as quickly as possible. I never found it. Hopefully, this article will serve those needs for other people. This article is going to be rather lengthy, but I encourage you to work your way through it. NHibernate is a complex piece of software, with a steep learning curve. This article will flatten the curve from a matter of days or weeks to a matter of a few hours.

Introduction to Partial Methods

Partial methods are a new feature in the .NET programming world. The earlier versions of .NET had partial class, partial structures, partial interface. With the introduction of ".NET Framework 3.0", the partial family gets a new member partial method, which allows to separate method definition and implementation. Partial methods are not really complicated. In this article, I will try to explain the basic rules of partial methods and how simple it is to use partial methods.

Android and iOS Mobile Device Development with Azure Mobile Services using HTML5 and JavaScript

I'm going to adapt the sample todo app that's part of the Get started with Mobile Services tutorial. You'll notice that there are already tutorials for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 but the problem with these, excluding WP8, is that you need to use an environment other than Visual Studio. This might be OK if you're already familiar with Java, Objective C, Eclipse, and XCode, but is obviously less than ideal if you're not.

Debugging Code Efficiently in Visual Studio with the DebuggerDisplay Attribute

It is sometime difficult when you have a bunch of properties exposed from a class and you just need few of them while debugging a code block. Sometimes it becomes even more complex when you have a collection of that class. Is there any easiest way to improve the code debugging in Visual Studio? Yes, there is. In this post we are going to learn this technique if you have never used it yet. Code debugging is not a child's play and it's becomes difficult when debugging a code written by someone else. In such case, if your boss assigns a bug to you and asks to fix as priority basis, it may come as thunderstorm. While debugging the code, you notice that it's an issue in a collection where the values are not properly assigned, you have to break your head pinning the items in the Visual Studio debugger and checking individual properties/variables in multiple levels. Just think about a scenario like this: In the above scenario, you have to go...

Tips for Localizing WP8 XAML Apps

This is Part 1 of a two part series. Part 1 gives you a deeper understanding of the standard pattern for localizing a Windows Phone 8 XAML app along with a lesson learned or two. In Part 2 (coming soon) I will describe how the powerful Multilingual App Toolkit , which will soon be released for the Windows Phone SDK 8.0, can make the end-to-end process of localizing your app substantially easier. So you've decided to localize your planned Windows Phone app. Perhaps you realized (or already knew) that making your app available in other languages means your app can reach a much bigger market with fewer competitors. You've read Localization best practices for Windows Phone and How to build a globalized app for Windows Phone and other content in the Globalization and localization for Windows Phonesection of MSDN.

SQLite in WP8: The sequel

Last week I've blogged about using SQLite in an MVVM scenario in Windows Phone 8. Since, in my opinion, the post was already getting to an epic length I decided to leave out a part for this week. I'll try to keep it a bit shorter this time, should be able to. The part I left out was using relationships and foreign keys with SQLite and the sqlite-net library. I'll be building upon the project of the previous post, so the task schedule thingy. What we'll be doing is adding the possibility of creating subtasks so that a task can be divided into smaller tasks. Note that this is just a proof of concept (POC) it's in no way a complete application and it will have some strange things but that's the whole fun of a POC.

Developing for WP

Its now been a year since I first got involved with Windows Phone, and I have just received my first ever revenue payment for app sales from Microsoft! In this post I share my experiences coming from an iOS background, good and bad. First of all, the Windows Phone UI is very refreshing, the devices look good and its a very different user experience from iOS and Android (competition is good for the industry). I really like the way Microsoft support free trials of apps, and you can also tweak pricing in different countries (although I have yet to use that feature). C# is horrible of course, I much prefer Objective-C. But then again I personally pre-date Java so perhaps younger software developers will like it. :-) Thankfully I didn't have to do much of the coding myself!

Isolated Storage

I think sometimes, that my doggy is jealous of me, because he thinks that I am more intelligent then him (well, sometimes I also doubt that, whatever I don't want to discuss this publically). I give him meal twice a day, and he is very happy. There are times when he gets upset and do not eat. At that time he take his food with him and hide it somewhere, though that somewhere is still a mystery. He take out his food from that mysterious place when he is hungry and keep it back safe then. If my doggy is Silverlight, then his place of hiding food is Isolated Storage. Client side storage functionality of Silverlight apart from cookies is Isolated Storage. One can store files, images, maybe videos sometimes in this storage.

WP: writing a pinch and zoom image control

When I was working on FlightPredictor and was working on showing airport maps, I was surprised there was no builtin "pinch and zoom image control" in the Windows Phone SDK. (to be fair, there wasn't one in Android either, and I'm not sure about iOS) So I had to implement my own, with some help from the Internet. If I were doing this today, I'd just use the PanAndZoom control from Telerik's RadControls for Windows Phone. (which comes with the Nokia Premium Developer Program! Just sayin') But I did go through the trouble to implement it, so hopefully it will help someone out. Ed: another good solution is the SharpGIS ImageViewer - I haven't tried it, but it looks like it works well and you don't have to type in a bunch of code :-)

Showing a Hyperlink Style button to Popup a New Window in RadGridView for WPF

I've seen this question asked several times, "How do you show a hyperlink style button inside a column in RadGridView that will popup a new WPF Window upon click?" I've decided to write a short blog post to help others with this. Basically, instead of the default behavior of a hyperlink column (which sends you to a URL), we will popup a new WPF Window instead. If you're interested in learning more about displaying a web URL, then go here.

Basic Navigation in Kinect using WPF

Navigation in Kinect applications cannot be the same as other traditional applications with small buttons that are made to save safe and also Tabs that can allow a user to navigate with the application. Kinect approach is different and if you are new to Kinect, you probably came across the UI navigation problem as I did before, but was able to resolve the problem through friends who are also doing Kinect for Windows Development.

Blur for WP8

Quick app today! It's simple, it's called Blur, and it gives you a pretty blurred lock screen effect like the one WP Central showed off Lock Widgets with. 's a free Windows Phone 8 app and it's available in the store, here. It's free, as it really has no value, but if you like it, I'd appreciate a good rating on it in the store.
