Window Phone: How to Easily Store User Settings

Here's a base class for Windows Phone apps which I've been using to store user settings. It wraps the IsolatedStorageSettings and it's a slightly modified version of the SettingsStore-class included in the "A Case Study for Building Advanced Windows Phone Applications – Code Samples". Here's an example of how to use the base class (in a Windows Phone 8 app).

How to determine screen resolution on WP

This is a very common scenario most developers stumble across - they are building an app for Windows Phone and have to target all 3 screen resolutions available with Windows Phone 8. The 3 screen resolutions for your reference are: WVGA - 480x800 or 800x480 (15:9 ratio) WXGA - 768x1280 or 1280x768 (15:9 ratio) 720p - 720x1280 or 1280x720 (16:9 ratio)

Saving the WP8 Emulator State

Saving the emulator state between runs was one of the feature needed for the Windows Phone emulator, but till now it is not officially supported. It even makes more sense now when the Windows Phone 8 emulator is a full working operating system and not a trimmed one like Windows Phone 7/7.5 was. You could configure an email account, personalize the start screen, install some applications, install certificates or even save the state of an application that requires a lot of data to synchronize before the actual debugging and have everything ready the next time you start the emulator. Today I was trying to run the Windows Phone 8 emulator on a Parallels 8 machine using this post because I hate Windows 8 performance in Bootcamp (the disk access is crappy and the UEFI mode still needs drivers for sound, video and a way to enable Hyper-V). I observed that the first time you run an Windows Phone emulator it took more than 40 seconds to start. The reason is that the SDK creates a new Virtual Machine in Hyper-V and saves a "clean" snapshot of it.

Writing Files in Background on WP8 – Use IsolatedStorageFile

In some situations, you might want to write data to your local application folder from a background agent, such as a PeriodicTask. In Windows Phone 8, you can use StorageFile and StorageFolder to operate on the local application folder, however, specific scenarios might be better solved with the old IsolatedStorageFile approach.

How to develop for WP8 on your Mac

Interested in developing apps for Windows Phone 8, but you are developing on a Mac? No problem...check out the guide below to find a variety of options. First you should consider whether to build native WP8 applications or Web applications. Applications will run directly on the phone platform, and will deliver advanced performance and a fully integrated experience to the end user. Web applications developed with HTML5 and JavaScript will take advantage of the Web standards support of Internet Explorer 10 and the cross platform nature of HTML5 applications. There is a lot of debate about which way to go, native app or Web app with HTML5, and I would say that the answer is… it depends. In this post, I will try to present the main options to go one way or the other based on the assumption that you have a Mac and want to stick to it.

WPF Splash Screens

It may seem odd to blog about something as mundane as WPF splash screens. After all, it's a solved problem, right? Wrong. I think there are various problems that come about by using standard splash screen helpers, and I want to address those here. First though, we need to get back to basics by discussing what the purpose of a splash screen is. Contrary to many a splash you may have been subjected to, the purpose of a splash screen is not to annoy users or to wow business folks. To quote the repository of all knowledge.

Updating my WP App to WP8

Earlier this year I wrote a small Windows Phone 7 application in a day called Lost Phone Screen. It creates lock screens for you with your name and contact number on them to aid in finding your phone the old fashioned way when you lose it. No need for a GPS, just tell folks you have a small reward and give them a number to call. You can download it free now as folks will not pay 99 cents for anything except Angry Birds. But I'm not bitter. ;) Anyway, it works great on Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango.) Recently I got a Nokia Lumia 920 with Windows Phone 8 and since there's a number of new APIs and features I could exploit - not the least of which being the ability to programmatically set the phone's Lock Screen without the user needing to do anything - I figured it was time to update it.

How to Change the Start Page of the WP8 Application in VS2012?

When developing a Windows Phone 8 App, you might want to rename the default MainPage.xaml file or wish to change the Start Page of the Windows Phone Application from MainPage.xaml. How to create a splash screen for WP?

When a Windows Phone app is launched, a splash screen, represented by an image, appears immediately and remains displayed until navigation to the first page is complete. For apps that take more than a couple of seconds to load, a splash screen can give the user immediate feedback that the app is launching. Alternatively, you can use a splash screen to provide brand identification and to customize your app.

Make quality app and Earn by Ads

This is my first non-technical article in my blog, in this article I will write about almost a year journey on Windows Phone and recently started journey of Windows Store. I will take Windows Phone app example and provide my learning on each step. All the learnings of making app in Windows Phone applies to making apps in Windows Store as well. I started making apps since January, 2012 and my first app was Alphabets got published on 31st Jan 2012. This was pretty Vanilla kind of app, it would be good to say it was boring app. I don't like Vanilla kind of apps then obviously why anyone else will like it. What I do with Vanilla kind of app if I download by mistake I UNINSTALL it immediately

Taking a Look at Registering a new WP8 Device and Syncing Content

One of the first things that I did after receiving my Nokia Lumia 920 was register the device, so that I could start deploying applications to it for an upcoming Telerik project and blog post. Registering Windows Phone devices has changed since the Mango days, so let's look at what is required to register your new phone as well as sync content. Windows Phone 8 If you have a Windows Phone 8 device, then no additional software (like Zune) is required. Just plug your Windows Phone into an available USB port and open the Windows Phone Developer Registration program (You can find this application after you have installed the Windows Phone 8 SDK). The one thing to note here is that in order to use the Windows Phone 8 SDK, you must be using Windows 8. If you are looking for a list of everything new in Windows Phone 8, then I would suggest the official one and this one by Justin Angel.

Running both versions of the WP Emulator Simultaneously

I had a habit of testing my app in emulator & device in my free bored time. With the WP SDK 7.1.1 update, there comes 2 versions of emulator - but actually it's a single Executable. so we cant launch the same app twice with different configuration. I find it difficult to test one by one on both the version of emulator. so I tried to find out a way. finally I got some and share it with my pals.
