InteractiveToolTip - Tooltips you can click on!

A few months ago I was working on a code-analysis tool for a project. The tool had the ability to detect a wide range of issues with the code under analysis, and as many of these problems could be corrected automatically I started looking at a suitable user-interface for presenting the information to the user and allowing them to choose whether to apply the automated fixes. After trying a few ideas out, I hit on the idea of using a balloon-style tooltip which could be displayed adjacent to the piece of code with a problem. This took care of the presentation, but of course you can't put controls into WinForms tooltips... I hit Google thinking that I couldn't possibly be the only person out there with this problem. I wasn't, but I also couldn't find any solutions, just a lot of people asking how to do it. Undeterred, I started to research how tooltips work.

Internals of Dependency Property in WPF

WPF introduces new property system to us. Every WPF objects that is inherited from DependencyObject inherently supports Dependency property containers within it. That means you can define your own dependency property in your code which can take part in some of the interesting features of WPF like Binding, Styles, Triggers, Animation, Property Inheritence etc. Today I will concentrate on how Dependency Property system is actually built and what are the benefits we get instead of using CLR property system.

GlobalizationResource in ASP.NET

It is that part of .NET that deals with "Multi Lingual" Applications i.e the web application which can generate content in different languages. The Dynamic content which comes from the database will already be in a specific language we have to explicitly take care of the static content we change from language to language

For every language which we wish to support we add a RESOURCE FILE having key value pairs ,the keys will be same but the values will change based on the language which our application supports.

State Machine in Workflow

State-Machine workflow is an event driven workflow. The State machine workflow relies on external events to drive the workflow to completion. The workflow is always in one of the states, and has to wait for an event to arrive before transitioning to a new state workflow. The state machine defines a structure to follow.

Tangrams in WPF

Tangram is a popular Chinese game, where a player is given with set of blocks and asked to form a specific shape (given an outline), there are several puzzles based on tangrams and forming square with given blocks is the most popular one, however I personally like the tangrams for 'T' and 'H' puzzles, which I came across when purchasing toys for my son. the tangram looks similar to what is shown in in figure (1)

AJAX for Beginners - Understanding ASP.NET AJAX Server Controls

Desktop applications and web applications have one major difference and that is the stateless nature of web applications. A website runs on a client and communicates with a server in a stateless manner. So every action taken by the user on his browser has to be propagated back to the web server to determine the outcome of that action. Due to this required postback to the server, web applications find it very difficult to achieve a high degree of responsiveness in terms of user interface and functionality (something that desktop applications manage quite easily).

AJAX, i.e., Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is the technique that can be used to have communication between the client and server without needing a postback. The benefit of avoiding postback is faster response to the user, the page in the browser is not changed/refreshed/posted so the user can continue to use it while data is sent to the server and user actions like keypresses can also be communicated to the server to provide more meaningful results (example: autosuggest), i.e., enhanced overall usability of the web application.

Design and Develop a website using ASP.NET MVC 4, EF, Knockoutjs and Bootstrap

All websites are growing faster these days, and once it grows, it is very hard to write, organize and maintain. As we add new functionality or developer to a project, any large web applications with poor design may be go out of control. So the idea behind this article is to design a website architecture that must be simple, easily understandable by any web designer (beginner to intermediate) and Search Engines. For this article I am trying to design a website for any individuals to maintain their contact details online. However, in future, the same application could be used by large community all over the world with added functionality and modules. So, the design should be easily adaptable in order to cope with the future growth of business.

In this article I will talk about creating and designing User Interface (UI) in such a manner so that UI will be separated from the business logic, and can be created independently by any designer/developer. For this part we will use ASP.Net MVC, Knockout Jquery and Bootstrap.

The Second part of this series is more about database design and implementing business logic using structured layers using SQl Server 2008, Entity Framework, and Castle Windsor for Dependency Injection.

Demystifying unexpected redirects to login page in ASP.NET

Have you often configured the authorization settings of your website to specify areas with special access rules? One of the common scenarios is to create a website that should be available only to authenticated users. When doing this, have you ever run into the strange behavior of a login page life cycle being executed multiple times when the access to all pages is denied for anonymous users? Read on to see why this happens and how you can avoid it with only a few changes in the web.config file of your website.

SignalR - Simple Chat Application in C#

Hello friends, today I am going to explain to you how to create a simple chat application using SignalR. Before looking at the code and understanding, let's try and understand what "SignalR" is.

SignalR is nothing but an Asynch Library which can be used to develop web applications and those applications provides some services which runs asynchronously. In other terms, SignalR is a library which can be used to create Real Time applications. In general terms, I feel the term "Real Time" means something or some event that actually happens with us at a particular time. Well, then "Real Time" in terms of a web application would mean "An immediate response sent by the Server on the Client's request". There is a brief explanation of the term Real Time here.

All right now moving towards SignalR, earlier it was not a part of the ASP.NET Family, but now Microsoft has incorporated it into VS 2012 and the .NET Framework 4.5. You can download the package here "Microsoft ASP.NET Fall 2012 Update BUILD Release". Checkout the Overview section before downloading the package.

SignalR is a library which is supported only by .NET Framework 4.0 and 4.5. So if you are one of those unlucky guys that want this library but are still working uing .NET Framework 3.5, it's now high time to switch to the latest framework version.

Understanding ASP.NET MVC (Model View Controller) Architecture for Beginners

This article is intended to provide basic concepts and fundamentals of ASP.NET MVC (Model View Controller) architecture workflow for beginners.

"M" "V" "C" stands for "MODEL" "VIEW" "CONTROLLER". ASP.NET MVC is an architecture to develop ASP.NET web applications in a different manner than the traditional ASP.NET web development. Web applications developed with ASP.NET MVC are even more SEO (Search Engine) friendly.

Developing ASP.NET MVC application requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or higher.

Architecture Guide: ASP.NET MVC Framework + N-tier + Entity Framework and Many More

The Model View Controller (MVC) is an architectural pattern used in software engineering. The pattern isolates "domain logic" (the application logic for the user) from input and presentation (GUI), permitting independent developments, testing and maintenance of each.
Today, the Microsoft variant of MVC called ASP.NET MVC, which is now part of .NET framework 4.1, is gaining momentum among software designers. In addition to that the enthusiasm is also high among developers to support the community with materials that speed up application development with ASP.NET MVC framework. There are many source libraries on the internet, where such contributions can be found. These free off-the-shell libraries/ components have positively influence the modern software industry in many different ways. However, as it was with any other case, this has a few negatives too. Today, unfortunately, junior designers, who are trying to do their first system in MVC, are struggling to select the right set of off-the-shell components correctly. They do worthlessly complex designs by needlessly committing them-selves to use these off-the-shell components. One needs to understand that you don't have to use everything in every (or the first) system you design. You need to use only the suited ones. But finding the suited options, when many different options are made available, is easier said than done.

Introducing “Razor” – a new view engine for ASP.NET

One of the things my team has been working on has been a new view engine option for ASP.NET.

ASP.NET MVC has always supported the concept of "view engines" – which are the pluggable modules that implement different template syntax options.  The "default" view engine for ASP.NET MVC today uses the same .aspx/.ascx/.master file templates as ASP.NET Web Forms.  Other popular ASP.NET MVC view engines used today includeSpark and NHaml.

The new view-engine option we've been working on is optimized around HTML generation using a code-focused templating approach. The codename for this new view engine is "Razor", and we'll be shipping the first public beta of it shortly.
