Design and Develop a website using ASP.NET MVC 4, EF, Knockoutjs and Bootstrap

All websites are growing faster these days, and once it grows, it is very hard to write, organize and maintain. As we add new functionality or developer to a project, any large web applications with poor design may be go out of control. So the idea behind this article is to design a website architecture that must be simple, easily understandable by any web designer (beginner to intermediate) and Search Engines. For this article I am trying to design a website for any individuals to maintain their contact details online. However, in future, the same application could be used by large community all over the world with added functionality and modules. So, the design should be easily adaptable in order to cope with the future growth of business.

In this article I will talk about creating and designing User Interface (UI) in such a manner so that UI will be separated from the business logic, and can be created independently by any designer/developer. For this part we will use ASP.Net MVC, Knockout Jquery and Bootstrap.

The Second part of this series is more about database design and implementing business logic using structured layers using SQl Server 2008, Entity Framework, and Castle Windsor for Dependency Injection.

Ext JS 4 MVC-Tutorial : Sencha Designer

Traditionally, ExtJs projects were developed using text editors like Vim, Emacs or Notepad, and today you can continue using it, but there's a new tool to help building ExtJs applications: Sencha Designer.

Sencha Designer is the new evolution of ExtJs Designer. The previous version allowed us to create Views that can be integrated to our projects, and extended using a text editor, but the newest incarnation allows much more than that, now it's a complete ide, even with a text editor included.

One drawback (to me) of the new Sencha Designer is that if you choose to create a project using it, you will be forced to use it from the very beginning of your application. For example you can't start an app using your text editor, then continue using Sencha Designer, for me this is a major problem. Imagine a workgroup composed of some developers using Sencha Designer (front end designers) and others using just text editors, if a programmer adds a View by hand, this view is not imported automatically to Sencha Designer and can't be modified by the front end designer.

ExtJS and a Simple MVC (Model-View-Controller) – Tutorial – Part 1

MVC – Model View Controller has become quite the standard when developing highend software applications, but what has it meant for web applications? Lately, even on the web, it has become quite the "done thing", especially with the support of frameworks such as Symfony and YUI (PHP). That's why I will be taking a look at the new ExtJS 4.1 – JavaScript framework with MVC support.

Understanding ASP.NET MVC (Model View Controller) Architecture for Beginners

This article is intended to provide basic concepts and fundamentals of ASP.NET MVC (Model View Controller) architecture workflow for beginners.

"M" "V" "C" stands for "MODEL" "VIEW" "CONTROLLER". ASP.NET MVC is an architecture to develop ASP.NET web applications in a different manner than the traditional ASP.NET web development. Web applications developed with ASP.NET MVC are even more SEO (Search Engine) friendly.

Developing ASP.NET MVC application requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or higher.

Architecture Guide: ASP.NET MVC Framework + N-tier + Entity Framework and Many More

The Model View Controller (MVC) is an architectural pattern used in software engineering. The pattern isolates "domain logic" (the application logic for the user) from input and presentation (GUI), permitting independent developments, testing and maintenance of each.
Today, the Microsoft variant of MVC called ASP.NET MVC, which is now part of .NET framework 4.1, is gaining momentum among software designers. In addition to that the enthusiasm is also high among developers to support the community with materials that speed up application development with ASP.NET MVC framework. There are many source libraries on the internet, where such contributions can be found. These free off-the-shell libraries/ components have positively influence the modern software industry in many different ways. However, as it was with any other case, this has a few negatives too. Today, unfortunately, junior designers, who are trying to do their first system in MVC, are struggling to select the right set of off-the-shell components correctly. They do worthlessly complex designs by needlessly committing them-selves to use these off-the-shell components. One needs to understand that you don't have to use everything in every (or the first) system you design. You need to use only the suited ones. But finding the suited options, when many different options are made available, is easier said than done.

Exploring the MVC, MVP and MVVM Design Patterns

Take advantage of MVC, MVP and MVVM Design Patterns to build applications that are easier to test and maintain

Design patterns can be used to solve complex design problems in your application. However, your design should be compact and it should not drive your business requirements. Rather, you should choose the right design pattern depending on the business requirements at hand.

Differences between MVC and MVP for Beginners

In the modern world, an architect who can engineer an efficient decoupled system is considered as an invaluable asset to the company. This is because a decoupled system will lower the maintenance costs and help the developers to make quick alterations to the program without affecting the overall system. A decoupled system promotes parallel development, meaning work can be divided among different developers which will cut short the development time significantly. In this article, I explain about the two most popular patterns used for developing decoupled systems. They are called Model View Controller (MVC) and Model View presenter (MVP).

Strongly Typed Views in MVC

When you add a new View in MVC, you get an opportunity to create it strongly typed. In the image given below, when you check 'Create a strongly-typed view' and select the 'Model class' you get following code snippet on the view page. @model MvcApplication2_InternetTemplate.Models.Comment Above peace of code is just a fully qualified name of the model, now we need to supply the type

Scaffold your ASP.NET MVC 3 project with the MvcScaffolding package

This post is part of a series about the MvcScaffolding NuGet package:
  • This post: Scaffold your ASP.NET MVC 3 project with the MvcScaffolding package
  • Standard usage: Typical use cases and options
  • One-to-Many Relationships
  • Scaffolding Actions and Unit Tests
  • Overriding the T4 templates
  • Creating custom scaffolders
  • Scaffolding custom collections of files
Among many other improvements with ASP.NET MVC 3, we're keen to make it easier to pick up and start using productively if you're entirely new to the framework, and to automate common development tasks if you're experienced and already know what you're doing.

So, I've been working with Scott Hanselman lately on an enhanced new scaffolding package called MvcScaffolding. The term "Scaffolding" is used by many software technologies to mean "quickly generating a basic outline of your software that you can then edit and customise". The scaffolding package we're creating for ASP.NET MVC is greatly beneficial in several scenarios.

Behavior Driven Development (BDD) with SpecFlow and ASP.NET MVC

Test Driven Development (TDD) has been around for about a decade, and has been mainstream for at least five years now. During this time, TDD practitioners have been gradually changing and refining the methodology, the mindset, and the terminology in an effort to increase its usefulness and avoid some of the problems that newcomers often experience.

The mindset and terminology has shifted so much that some folks have started using a new name for the updated methodology: BDD. Here's a brief overview*

BDD using SpecFlow on ASP.NET MVC Application

I have been doing TDD (Test Driven Development/Design) for quite some now, and I have found this to be pretty useful. Writing test is always kind of pain if you don't get it right. The problem with TDD seems it's more oriented towards writing tests whereas the developer may be more concerned with the design and behaviour of the system.

The problem per se doesn't lie with TDD, but more with the mindset. It's about getting our mind in the right spot. So, here comes BDD a.k.a. Behaviour Driven Development. These are not just terminology changes, but it's about a change in the way we write our tests or rather specification in terms of BDD. Without further ado, let's dig deeper into this unchartered territory.

Creating a simple application using MVC 4.0

In this article, we will understand what is MVC and create a simple application using Model, View and Controller.

Model View Controller: MVC is a software architecture, which separates the logic from the user interface. This is achieved by separating the application into three parts Model, View and Controller. MVC is separation of concern. MVC is also a design pattern.
Model:Represents the logical behavior of data in the application. It represents applications business logic. Model notifies view and controller whenever there is change in state.
View: Provides the user interface of the application. A view is the one which transforms the state of the model into readable HTML.

Controller: Accepts inputs from the user and instructs the view and model to perform the action accordingly.

JQuery UI Datepicker in MVC 4 Issue

Today, I spent couple of hours in finding the best suited fix of this issue. Actually that was a very simple problem and we may fix it by adding another http request layer in the application but that was not a productive choice. If you create a MVC 4 application using 'Internet' template, you will find 'BundleConfig.cs' file in 'App_Start' folder, open it. You will notice there is

Partial View in MVC

Partial View allow us to put HTML and C# code into a file that we can reuse across multiple other views. This is very useful when you work on a large application. Assume we have following peace of code that we would like to make reusable for other views. We will extract above marked code and paste it in a new 'partial view' and then we'll just call that 'partial view' from this foreach..
