How to open Internet Explorer by code in a Metro style application

Recently I've worked on a Windows 8 application to promote my blog: people can use it to read my posts within the application and to be notified (using both toast and tile notifications) every time a new post is published. The application uses a web view to display the detail of a post: the problem came when I had to manage the snapped view, since there isn't enough space on screen to display a web view.

During the pre certification lab that I've attended in Microsoft Italy the trainer gave me a good tip: in case the application is snapped, the post detail should be opened using Internet Explorer and not inside the application. In fact, in this scenario, Internet Explorer will open in filled mode and the user will be able to read the post without any difficulty.

Microsoft Changes Its Logo After 25 Years..

The old logo is probably quite familiar to anyone who has used a computer in the last 25 years. No, that's not an exaggeration, it's how long the old logo had been in use.

The new logo is similar to that of Windows 8, except it retains the colors and isn't tilted. The font used in the logo is Segoe – the same font used in Windows 8, Windows Phone, Outlook.com and other Microsoft-made UIs.

WP8 SDK Leaked (Not by Microsoft)

As if the soon to be released Windows Phone 8 couldn't get anymore mysterious, it just did. A chinese website leaked the SDK for Microsoft's new mobile OS and those who have gotten their hands on it seem to have mixed feelings about WP8. In June, Microsoft held a Windows Phone Developer Conference where they told some of their secrets regarding Windows Phone 8 but none of that information included what's come out from the leaked WP8 SDK.

Exploring Win8 Metro: The RichEditBox & FilePickers

Win8 provides a number of controls in the XAML toolkit that are easy to use RichEdit-File Pickerand that provide a great deal of flexibility and power. I'll be writing about some of these controls now and then, starting with some simple and easy to use controls that do a lot of work for you.

The RichEdit box allows the user to open and view and edit a Rich Text document. Rich Text refers to all the text attributes you associate with a word processor but not with a text editor (e.g., bold, color, etc.). The RichEditBox control handles all the work of understanding and presenting the rich text.

You are the controller – a step in to WP7 -> Win8 networking

I couldn't resist, I should be working on my Windows 8 Port of Flipped (which seems to be going swimmingly) and finishing of some other projects but glamour got the better of me as I rolled out of the covers and here we are.

One of my age old dreams with game development (even prior to XNA) was to be able to pick up my mobile device and use it as an alternate display or additional controller, at the time it was my trusty Windows Mobile PPC, times have evolved but my vision is still fresh.

Positioning Popup Menus in Windows 8 Metro

Often when building Windows 8 apps you'll want to provide a menu of options from the app bar, this may be a list of different ways to sort or filter the data. For these simple menus WinRT provides the PopupMenu control (for more complicated popup user interfaces I recommend the Flyout control from the Callisto library), these menus are very easy to create by creating UI Commands and appending them to the menus Commands collection.

Return Multiple Values(or Objects) in VB.NET

You might have searched "How to return multiple objects in VB.Net" in google and you might have got a lot of Ir-relevant articles. But this is not such an article, this goes to the point. I am going to teach you how to return multiple values in VB.net.

I gave a lot of try (Searching), how to do the stuff but most of the search results turned out to be like using a single object and returning multiple values in it, but that I do not need. So I thought of writing an article here about the same. So at least it will be helpful for sum beginners.

Microsoft explains why it killed the Windows 8 Start button

Microsoft removed the Start button from Windows 8's Consumer Preview version earlier this year, generating a lot of discussion and mixed reaction over a user interface element that was first introduced in Windows over 15 years ago. In an interview with PC Pro, the company has revealed that telemetry data was a big part of the decision to scrap the Start button and traditional Start menu in Windows 8.

Improved Solution Explorer in Visual Studio 2012 to Improve Productivity

Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 RC is now available for public download. There are plenty of new enhancements in this release of Visual Studio IDE. I already started explaining them in my blog for the developers to improve their productivity using this new IDE.   Today in this productivity improvement post, we will know about the enhanced version of the Solution Explorer. It is not new and was available in earlier versions too but in this new release they added new enhancements for the developers. Check out the complete post to know about it and it's benefits.   What's New in Solution Explorer? Unlike the old Visual Studio Solution Explorer, the new IDE has some enhancements to it. If you already used the Productivity Power Tools, these will be familiar to you already because Microsoft brought many features from that. Let's have a look to the all new solution explorer of visual studio 2012.   The solution explorer consists of few buttons in the toolbar named...

Refactor your Code easily using the Visual Studio 2012

In our last blog post we discussed about browser switching mechanism in Visual Studio 2012 for web developers to test their web applications against different web browsers which actually increases the productivity time of such applications.   Today in this post, we will learn about the Refactor feature of Visual Studio 2012 which will again improve your productivity without using any additional tools or extensions. So, continue reading this post to learn about this feature of new Visual Studio IDE.   Note: I composed this post based on Visual Studio 2012 RC (version: 11.0.50522.1 RCREL) and can't guarantee this in the final version of the product though the chance of feature change is very negligible.     Microsoft introduces a new "Refactor" menu in Visual Studio 2012 IDE, which will help the developer to refactor their codes easily without using any 3rd party control or extensions. As this is an in-built feature now, hence you will get it...

Windows 8 Apps – Keeping it Simple

We have all been is situations where we have seen code implemented in an unnecessarily complex way or where the number of features in an app has gotten out of control. I like to think that the use of "KISS" ("Keep it simple – stupid") is one of the main stays of all the projects that I am involved in (!). However, I have seen my first Windows 8 project evolve from being simple (or so I thought) to being simple ("no, but really this time"). And I have to conclude that there is an algorithm in play that doesn't always get the acknowledgement it deserves. In short I am talking about the relationship between "time and complexity". Most people might understand that the more complex something is the more time is required for implementation. However, in my experience often times the opposite is true and time can be the (often missing) crucial factor in harnessing and reigning in an otherwise complex application.

Designing MetroTwit for Windows 8

We know it's still a bit rough around the edges and not feature complete but we hope it offers a teaser of what we think will be a compelling Twitter app for Windows 8 users.

Designing MetroTwit for Windows 8 was no walk in the park. We couldn't simply copy and paste our desktop application's source code; WPF code doesn't port to WinRT as well as you may have heard. But regardless, that code wasn't designed for touch. A tough challenge to say the least.
