Custom Authentication in Silverlight

"Muggle-born have no access to go inside the chamber of secret Harry, and only a heir of Slytherin can open the chamber. Since he is already here, the chamber of secret, has already been opened." As you have guessed already, lines said by Albus Dumbledore to Harry Potter. Wonder why Harry Potter? Actually, our Silverlight is very much similar to that of Hogwarts. In case of authentication, I guess, to be precise. Silverlight provide the facility to authenticate the user using a particular query, making sure whether the querying user has the access to use the query or not. Just like you have to authenticate yourself, before the door of any house in Hogwarts, while requesting it to open. If you are not authenticated, your request will be rejected. In silverlight however, you have to authenticate yourself at the very beginning of the application, through a process we call as, Sign in.

Easy way to perform duplexing in Silverlight

The idea of duplexing is very old, when I first read it, it reminded me about my Mom. Well actually not reminded me, but she never allow me to even forget her, can you imagine 50 missed calls in a day!!! . Okay, imagine you being client and your mom being server. It's usually client that starts communicating with server, requests for data, for authentication, for money, in this case. The server can either respond positively or negatively to the client's request. That is if you request for money, you either get it or don't, later one usually happens in my case. Now what if the server initiates the communication? Yes! It's not always that the server listen the request of the client, but there are situations when server also broadcasts the messages to all it's client. This process is called Duplex polling. In silverlight however, there are many ways to perform this server to client broadcasting, one way is through WCF Services which we are going to use now. So grab a cup of coffee or two, coz journey is little bit lengthy and a bit complicated.

TilePanel - An alternative to the WrapPanel

The TilePanel is a WPF Panel similar to a WrapPanel that wraps its content by placing the items at the topmost position in the control. This is useful when displaying a collection of different sized objects and the collection order is not important. The Panel also respects the Orientation property for wrapping either horizontally or vertically.

Silverlight CommandBinding with Simple MVVM Toolkit

Silverlight 4 enables CommandBinding by using properties like Command and CommandParameter only for Button Base Class which means that CommandBinding can only support those elements in Silverlight which are derived from Button Base Class and will be executing only by Click event.  For e.g., button, Hyperlink Button, Repeat Button, menu controls etc. (N.B. In the previous version of Silverlight 4 CommandBinding was not possible).

Showing a busy indicator per view in Silverlight using MVVM

When using Silverlight, everything is asynchronous. It seems to be the trend, the same goes for Windows 8. This means that you will need to inform the user about progress in the background. Silverlight uses the BusyIndicator for this behavior. Using MVVM, it might be a bit harder to implement the BusyIndicator in a correct way, but Catel provides the IPleaseWaitService for years which can be mocked easily during test scenarios.

Passwords & Secrets (Encryption & Observable Collections)

Passwords & Secrets is a notepad-style app that you can protect with a master password. Therefore, it's a great app for storing a variety of passwords and other secrets that you don't want getting into the wrong hands. The note-taking functionality is top-notch, supporting

Auto-save, which makes jotting down notes fast and easy
Quick previews of each note
The ability to customize each note's background/foreground colors and text size
The ability to email your notes

On top of this, the data in each note is encrypted with 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption to keep prying eyes from discovering the data. This encryption is done based on the master password, so it's important that the user never forgets their password! There is no way for the app to retrieve the data without it, as the app does not store the password for security reasons.

Silverlight 5 Modal Windows

You can display multiple Window instances in trusted, out-of-browser applications. This enables you to create non-modal dialog boxes, tear-off windows, and user-adjustable layouts that can span multiple monitors.

Silverlight provides support for modal dialog boxes that work in-browser and out-of-browser against the main window, like the ChildWindow control. However Silverlight's built-in support for native Modal Windows is limited to the MessageBox class.

Playing Youtube videos in Silverlight 5 using VLC Media Player

In this article we would see, how we could leverage the support of VLC control for playing "Youtube" videos.

Requirements
You need Silverlight 5 SDK installed, as VLC controls are available for Silverlight 5 support.
VLC player installed. (Version 1.2 onwards)

We would create a sample Silverlight 5 project. Remember that we need to have Out-Of-Browser enabled. (currently it supports OOB to access VLC COM). We would also need MVVMLight libraries for our MVVM pattern.

Introduction to Telerik RadControls for Metro (Bar Chart)

Telerik is one of the lead providers of .NET components and development tools. At work, my group utilizes a lot of Telerik products, so when I learned that Telerik is jumping into metro style application bandwagon, I would like to try it.

The first component that I look at today is a chart component. When we talk about Line-Of-Business (LOB) application, besides grids and forms, charts are other type of controls that are used often. WinRT (either XAML or HTML) provides vector-based drawing API that we can used to draw a chart, but it is better to be able to utilize reusable components for common charts like bar, pie, or line charts.

In this post, I will create a simple bar chart using Telerik chart control for metro in XAML. As always, I will reuse my Person and SamplePeople classes that I used in other posts about Windows 8. In this example, I will plot number of my customers by gender in each state using bar chart.

Reading Harddisk Information Using Silverlight 4 Out Of Browser Application

To read the hard disk information in silverlight was my question which I have search on net and was keen to do that, because I want to learn the silverlight. So after search on internet and searching the msdn for this question here is what I have found. You can see the out of the sample code in the Image 1, Here in the Image 1 I have display the hard disk partition just like the window 7 , the title , the progress bar to indicate the usage of the partition space and the at the end the summary of the the partition size.
Image 1
Now let us start with the code sample. First you have to create silverlight out of browser application for this you can click here to read how to create an out of browser application. From the link you can learn how to create an out of browser application in detail.Below is my code which is used to get the drive information. Here you can see that I have called the AutomationFactory.CreateObject, and passing the progID to the CreateObject.The AutomationFactory Provides access to registered Automation servers.Automation is a Windows-based technology that applications use to expose functionality to scripting tools and other applications. For example, you can use Automation to add Office features to your Silverlight-based applications.
An application or component exposing functionality is called an Automation server; an application accessing the functionality is called an Automation client. Because Automation servers must be preinstalled and run in full trust, Silverlight enables only trusted applications to serve as Automation clients.
dynamic fileSystem = AutomationFactory.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject");
dynamic drives = fileSystem.Drives;
DriveInformationCollection = new List≶DriveInformation>();

foreach (var drive in drives)
{
try
{
if (drive.IsReady)
DriveInformationCollection.Add(new DriveInformation
{
VolumeName = drive.VolumeName,
DriveLetter = drive.DriveLetter,
TotalSpace = drive.TotalSize,
FreeSpace = drive.FreeSpace,
FileSystem = drive.FileSystem,
DriveType = (eDriveType)Enum.ToObject(typeof(eDriveType), drive.DriveType)
});
}
catch (COMException Ex)
{
string strMessage = Ex.Message;
}
}
Now we have the reference of the automation server which is store in fileSystem of type dynamic.Dynamic is a new type provided by framework 4, you can get more information about the dynamic type by clicking here. Next I have call the drives object of the fileSystem to store the drive in new dynamic object. And then I have used to foreach loop to get the drive information to be store in the class which I have created with the name DriveInformation name.The Drive object allows you to gain information about the various drives attached to a system, either physically or over a network. Its properties allow you to obtain information about:
  • The total size of the drive in bytes (TotalSize property)
  • How much space is available on the drive in bytes (AvailableSpace or FreeSpace properties)
  • What letter is assigned to the drive (DriveLetter property)
  • What type of drive it is, such as removable, fixed, network, CD-ROM, or RAM disk (DriveType property)
  • The drive's serial number (SerialNumber property)
  • The type of file system the drive uses, such as FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and so forth (FileSystem property)
  • Whether a drive is available for use (IsReady property)
  • The name of the share and/or volume (ShareName and VolumeName properties)
  • The path or root folder of the drive (Path and RootFolder properties)
In the view of the form. I have used the list box control to display the drive information , which consist of the text block and the progress bar control.For progress bar control I have added two ChangePropertyAction. The condition for first ChangePropertyAction is to check the value of the progress bar if the value is greater then or equal to 80 then the progress bar will be shown red and if the value of the progress bar is less then 80 then progress bar will be shown normally. And the bottom of the user control I have used the grid layout control, the data context of the grid control is set to the selected Item of the list box control. When the selection of the list box changed the correspondent detail of the selected item will be displayed at the bottom of the user control.
