Internals of Dependency Property in WPF

WPF introduces new property system to us. Every WPF objects that is inherited from DependencyObject inherently supports Dependency property containers within it. That means you can define your own dependency property in your code which can take part in some of the interesting features of WPF like Binding, Styles, Triggers, Animation, Property Inheritence etc. Today I will concentrate on how Dependency Property system is actually built and what are the benefits we get instead of using CLR property system.

Tangrams in WPF

Tangram is a popular Chinese game, where a player is given with set of blocks and asked to form a specific shape (given an outline), there are several puzzles based on tangrams and forming square with given blocks is the most popular one, however I personally like the tangrams for 'T' and 'H' puzzles, which I came across when purchasing toys for my son. the tangram looks similar to what is shown in in figure (1)

Anagrams2 - A Simple WPF Game Application

It's a simple word game that allowed the user to find anagrams within a scrambled word, awarding Scrabble-based points and extra time based on the word found. I reveled in my cleverocity (I know - that's not really a word, which is ironic when you consider the nature of the code this article describes), and congratulated myself for a job well-done. Since my current job requires coding within WPF, I got the urge to revisit Anagrams, and give it a much-needed facelift.
I must admit that while I tried to use certain patterns and WPF practices, I certainly didn't make heroic efforts to stay rigidly within their implied guidelines. Everything in programming is a trade-off, and rigid application of those kinds of rules has absolutely no place in software development. Given the nature of and size of this application, that idea is even more applicable.

Keyboard input and TAB navigation between WPF controls in a Win32 application

It is possible to host WPF controls in a Win32 application, and the other way around, but because of the differences betweeb these technologies there are various issues that can appear. One of these is handling of keyboard input. Without diving too much into differences between WPF and Win32, I will show how to provide keyboard input for WPF controls hosted in a Win32 applications. For reading about the differences and the interoping between the two I suggest WPF and Win32 Interoperation.

To Bubble or Tunnel basic WPF Events

WPF gives us a number of different mechanisms for handling events – they are bubbling, tunneling, and direct. These are all known as Routed events.

Recently I was asked to explain how WPF handles events to a graduate. This is my way of explaining the topic.

Global Shortcuts in WinForms and WPF

Sometimes, your form or window may need to respond to a hotkey (shortcut) even when it is not focused. There is no built in .NET functionality that allows for this, but it is built into the Win32 API using RegisterHotKey andUnRegisterHotKey; we'll get to that later.

However, if you want to register multiple hotkeys, within and or outside your application, it gets a tad bit difficult. In this article, we'll be creating the classes.

Visual Studio 2012 Metro Styles for WPF

Although there are still serious discussions about whether the "Metro" design concept from Microsoft is good or not, WPF developers, who follow the trend, may now write their styles keeping the concept in mind. But despite the fact that many people think about the Tile Wall of Windows 8, when they hear the word "Metro", the concept itself actually means much more than that. The main idea is to keep things simple. No more gradients, no more colorful, blinking, glassy, flashing surfaces. One of the applications demonstrating this concept best is, no doubt, the new Visual Studio 2012. This article will present some Visual Studio like WPF styles.

Autocompletion with RichTextBox in WPF as Behavior

Often when creating documents you need to insert some of the top established collection items, which after using certain gestures are suggested to him. With regard to the text, Microsoft has implemented a technology known as Intellisense. This is a powerful tool, without which there can imagine themselves so high performance programmers, who are the greatest beneficiaries of this technology unless.

NotifyIcon with WPF applications

NotifyIcon is an utility form System.Windows.Forms which can be used by any application to invoke the default notification from the system tray. As per my latest requirement, I have to create an application that runs on system tray and occationally shows notification using the system tray default notifications. While working with it, I have wasted a considerable amount of time, and thought it would be worth mentioning the same in a blog.

Windows 8 & Data Binding. Part 4–Data Conversion

In Part 3 of this little mini-series on data binding in Windows 8 we looked at Element Binding. Today, we'll take a look at Data Conversion.

At times the data in your business object (the source for your binding) and the target UIElement may not have an exact type match. For example, if your Employee class wants to keep track of the start date for each Employee, a sensible way to do so is with a DateTime object. However, when we display that data we'll want to use a Text object, and we may not want the entire default conversion of a DateTime to a string. To rectify this problem, we can create a class that performs a conversion from one type to another (in this case, from DateTime to string). This class will implement IValueConverter and will have two methods: Convert, and ConvertBack.

Navigating Between Views in WPF and Prism

If you're creating loosely-coupled composable applications with Microsoft's WPF, Prism and Unity frameworks, as I described in my column for this month [ref: Managing Modules in WPF/Prism Applications], "navigation" means any change to the UI beyond updating the data being display. With the MVVM model, a lot of what counts as "navigation" can be done just by binding XAML controls in the View to ViewModel properties and then updating those properties from code in the ViewModel.

WPF Stylizing RowDefinitions & ColumnDefinitions

My favorite part of programming in WPF is the ease with which we compartmentalize the application components. Every Page or UserControl of course has a markup and a code-behind file, but if you are serious about architectural patterns like I am, then you also have a ViewModel and probably a related resource file as well.

I prefer to keep my markup files clean, defining visual attributes in a separate resource file. In doing so, adding or removing elements later, or altering visual properties is done more quickly and with more flexibility...all while providing the serenity that comes with S.O.C. (Separation of concerns).

Especially when dealing with themes and skinnability, the power of DynamicResource is a priceless commodity that in my opinion should never be limited arbitrarily. Dynamic Resources compliment the performance benefits of the M-V-V-M model by not front-loading the resource cache, and they are what makes dynamic skinnability so practical and appealing in the WPF Framework.

Whether your styles are defined in the local file markup or a merged resource dictionary, there are some inherent limitations to stylization that can quite easily be overcome. Take for instance RowDefinitions andColumnDefinitions...you can be diligent about parsing out the visual attributes of your UserControl, but ultimately you are forced to define these in your markup file, and unless you modify it in managed code at runtime, these values are inevitably STATIC. Not very frindly to a skinnable interface, is it?

Advanced Text Formatting in WPF

WPF provides several controls which allow working with text. Some of these controls are Label, TextBlock, TextBox, RichTextBox etc. But all these controls provide limited text formatting capabilities. There is yet another control provided by WPF, called FormattedText. This control provides extensive text formatting capabilities. In particular, the FormattedText control can be used in situations where you want to display large sized text as banners. Also it can be used to play animation and videos on text.
